Here we are, at Pulau Semakau. Looking at the photo below, one could be mistaken that this was at one of the parks in Singapore. However, this is the place where all of Singapore's waste (or simply rubbish) end up.
In Singapore, waste (the rubbish we throw down the rubbish chute) is collected and incinerated at incineration plants. Burning of rubbish is important as it reduces the volume of the rubbish by 90% (ie 10% of the original volume is left). What is left is ash. This ash is being dumped at the landfill in Semakau. Besides being a landfill, the island is also a haven for sport-fishing enthusiasts, star gazers and nature lovers to spot marine life during low tide.
